¿Quién es Gastón Fernández? La pregunta se repite en las únicas dos publicaciones sobre este escritor peruano muerto hace una década pero desaparecido desde siempre, la última de las cuales acaba de salir al mercado en edición numerada, reuniendo su poemario inédito Breviario Aparente y con portada blanca imperceptible, como el mismo Fernández lo ha venido siendo para el mundillo literario peruano.

"¿Son cien poemas, son cien estancias o es un solo poema que corre a lo largo de todo un libro?", se pregunta Renato Gómez, editor de este libro al que califica como una especie de diálogo religioso que cuestiona la condición humana. "En la poesía el espacio dice, y el espacio dice en este libro aún más, porque es un libro que busca desaparecer, que está buscando el silencio, el vacío, el no estar de algún modo, el no ser", añade.
¿Quién es Gastón Fernández? Se puede responder que fue un niño que nació en la Lima del año 40, que quiso ser sacerdote hasta que lo consideró una farsa, que estudió letras y después derecho, que quiso ser diplomático pero que no encontró alrededor de ninguna de estas opciones lo que andaba buscando: “la verdad”. Que se fue hasta Bélgica a fines de los sesenta y ahí la siguió buscando. Que se diplomó en historia del arte en la Universidad de Lovaina, en Bruselas, en el año 73, cuando tenía la edad de Cristo pero, a diferencia de este, con la fe puesta en su propio futuro literario. Que fue guía de museo y catedrático, que al final de sus años se interesó por la cultura oriental, que escribió varios libros de ensayos publicados en francés y ninguno traducido al español. Que en ellos decía creer en "el fin de la historia del arte", como para rematar el anuncio hecho por Fukuyama cuatro años antes sobre el fin de la historia y el último hombre. Que murió de cáncer convencido de que él mismo se lo estaba causando de tanto darle vuelta a sus ideas.
"Gastón es un fantasma y su literatura es abstracta", dice José Ignacio Padilla, quien anteriormente compiló la narrativa completa de Fernández y parte de su correspondencia. "Sus cuentos son como una película experimental", agrega Padilla y recuerda que Fernández consideraba que los lectores peruanos eran lectores del siglo XIX y por eso les gustaba Bryce Echenique o Vargas Llosa. "Tiene momentos en que es totalmente racionalista, abstracto, pero tiene momentos en que se baja al cuerpo, a todo tipo de pasiones fuertes", concluye.
¿Quién es Gastón Fernández? La pregunta se puede repetir una vez más, y también responder que fue el escritor que decía haber leído su primer libro a los 23 años aunque su hermana lo recuerde leyendo a Salgari desde niño. Que se sabía genial cuando en Bruselas, en medio de su "desorden ideal", se dedicaba a redactar sus historias que casi nadie acogía en Perú, peleándose desde allá con los editores de las revistas literarias en Lima. Que se sintió fuertemente influenciado por Kierkegaard y se autocalificaba de escritor "de vanguardia". Que escribía textos complejos donde la anécdota cedía paso a amplias descripciones de percepciones físicas y emotivas. Que creía vivir en "un universo de pensamiento abstracto y de estudio solitario", y que se separó de su mujer, Dominique, porque necesitaba más tiempo para leer. Que no sabía lo que era ser feliz porque nunca había buscado la felicidad. "La libertad del espíritu me parece el primer valor individual. Y yo soy suficientemente atormentado, apasionado, y lúcido como para satisfacerme de ese goce. Prefiero la paz del alma y la serenidad a la euforia", le escribió a su hermana Mariana en abril de 1994. También, se puede decir que el poeta terminó muriendo para darle la contra al destino y al hombre que le leyó la mano en la India y le prometió vida hasta el 2017. Gastón Fernández murió en 1997, veinte años y muchas lecturas antes de lo previsto.

Instrucciones Para Volver Del Olvido
La estrategia de Fernández para entregarnos sus versos
Primer paso: Conocer en la primavera del año 63 en el coro de la Asociación de Artistas Aficionados a una joven tímida llamada Enriqueta Beleván, que más tarde se haría poeta promisoria a fines de los setenta. Impresionarla con un hablar conciso y hacerse su amigo. Viajar a Bélgica y olvidarse de ella.
Segundo paso: Recibir por correo en Bruselas, en el año 84, un paquete de libros y revistas, entre ellas una CARETAS donde se anunciaba el segundo poemario de Enriqueta, Poemas de la bella pájara hornera, con foto que la escritora se dejó tomar después de que Doris Gibson la llamara personalmente para pedírselo.
Tercer paso: Enviarle a Enriqueta en diez entregas, con diez días de por medio, diez sobres de manila tamaño oficio con diez poemas en cada uno, numerados y en desorden. Sobres que, además de incluir poemas y destinatario, solo indiquen el remitente, sin nota alguna después de una desaparición de dos décadas. Solo en el último envío, una dedicatoria. Volver al olvido en algún cajón de la casa de Enriqueta.
Cuarto paso: Ser descubierto en el año 2002 por José Ignacio Padilla, joven director de la revista More Ferarum, para que este compile sus relatos y los entregue al público. Pasar desapercibido una vez más. Ser rescatado de los cajones de Enriqueta por el joven poeta y editor Renato Gómez para que este invierta sus ahorros en la publicación del Breviario Aparente en agosto de 2006.
Quinto paso: Aparecer en esta nota en PUERTOELHUECO.
Sin duda que hablar de Gaston Fernandez es palabras mayores, es importante que las letras peruanas empiecen a dejar atrás discursos narrativos encasillados y anacrónicos.
Buena por los dintilhacos, por combatir a la mafia, que es en el fondo un combate contra los defensores de esos discursos narrativos convenidos para las editoriales hegemónicas. Ojala podamos prescindir de una vez por todas de Ampuero, Thays, Cueto, Bayly, Roncagliolo, Castañeda, Niño de guzmán, y todos esos sucedaneos de Bryce y Vargas Llosa.
Esto dice Thays sobre el gran Gastón Fernandez, si una sola cosa hay que reconocerle a la mafia es que cuentan con los medios para embarcarse en cualquier proyecto editorial, a pesar del tufillo oportunista que tenga. Que no nos extrañe que ellos no solo publiquen Bombardero y ahora a Gaston Fernandez, siempre han sido hábiles para salir en la foto.

Debo decir que me siento particularmente entusiasmado por este rescate. Desde el año 89, en que Carlos Calderón Fajardo me habló de le existencia de Gastón Fernández, lo he admirado profundamente y junto a algunos amigos como Ricardo Suamalavia, hemos leído cada cosa suya publicada en revistas o los pequeños textos que le envió a Carlos Calderón Fajardo a través de cartas. Cuando en 1992 publiqué Las fotografías de Frances Farmer, me propuse no dejar de mencionar su nombre como un escritor peruano con el que me sentía identificado. Por aquellos años aún estaba vivo, pero no tuve oportunidad de conocerlo. El azar me condujo otra vez cerca a Gastón Fernández cuando publiqué un artículo en el extinto diario "El Sol" sobre los "raros" de la literatura peruana mencionándolo a él en primer término y recomendando su publicación. Al día siguiente, Abelardo Oquendo me informó que el mismo día, creo, que ese artículo fue publicado éste fallecía en Bruselas. Empecé entonces un intento, sin demasiada fortuna, de recopilar sus obras, pero pronto mi propia tarea literaria y mi trabajo -acababa de abandonar la vida universitaria- me hicieron postergar el proyecto. Felizmente, los editores de More Ferarum, en especial José Ignacio Padilla, decidieron rescatar del olvido a Gastón y publicaron una edición completa, muy cuidada, de Relato Aparente en el 2002. Lo lamentable es que, quizá buscando ser fieles al espíritu huraño de Gastón, o quizá por circustancias ajenas a la edición, el libro tuvo una vida fantasmal, se volvió inhallable e incluso resultó difícil de leer para quienes conseguimos un ejemplar debido a su complicada diagramación. Cuando me propusieron, hace un par de años, hacer la antología de relatos de peruanos viajeros Pasajeros Perdurables, publicada este año por Seix Barral, el primer nombre que se me vino a la mente para integrarla fue el de Gastón Fernández.
Confieso que desde hace un tiempo acaricio la idea de hacer una antología de aquellos relatos aparentes (así es como él nombraba a cada uno de sus cuentos) y presentar a su autor de un modo más amable -sin traicionar los textos, desde luego- a los lectores que lo desconocen. Sé por quienes lo conocieron que era un autor exigente con las condiciones de su publicación, lo que asustó a más de un editor, pero jamás pretendió ser un autor inédito o de fama espectral. Editar ese libro sería una muestra de agradecimiento por lo que significó mi lectura adolescente de sus obras pero, sobre todo, la posibilidad de que un grupo mayor de lectores conozcan a este escritor único en la literatura peruana. Confío poder hacerlo esta vez.
Poco a poco la gente se va dando cuenta de la futilidad de Ampuero, Thays, Cueto, Bayly, Roncagliolo, Castañeda, Niño de guzmán, y todos esos sucedaneos de Bryce y Vargas Llosa. Bien hecho, no por agrandados sino por inútiles y argollerazos.
