Thomas Ruggles Pynchon no es tan anónimo: goza ya, y desde hace años, de un reducto propio en el panteón de los escritores que no se leen pero que se prestan como referentes necesarios a los grandes momentos de la literatura del siglo XX.
Si existiese algún deseo de reconstruir la Europa tragicómica y caníbal de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, bastaría con deszurcir el tejemaneje de la Zona de El arco iris de gravedad (Gravity’s Rainbow, 1973) y reinstalar el funcionamiento de un sistema tácito de control que termine por atomizarse solo, ya sin la ayuda de tecnócratas o combustibles, con o sin guerras, traiciones o tratados internacionales, involuntaria, imperativamente.
Las cosas, las cosas literalmente, las piedras y las oficinas, los trámites longitudinales, el espacio sideral, el interregno entre personas, entre burócratas y amantes y desconocidos, la Historia misma, sea ésta lo que sea, a fuerza de puntapiés y muy dudosas coincidencias, adquirirían termodinámicas y tiempos propios; cada cosa (y por gravitación, capricho, inercia, cada ser) desarrollaría sus propias leyes físicas, sus holocaustos íntimos, su teología triste de babas y bisagras, sus márgenes irrepetibles de relatividad. Pornógrafo y santo
He aquí la razón fundamental para arrancar a Pynchon del panteón y sentárselo al frente, de la misma manera en la que aún invitamos a Wilde, a Shaw o a Aristóteles a mirarnos tomar café. Pynchon es pertinente, un eterno coetáneo. Es más, Pynchon sigue vivo y seguramente toma café. No solamente lo seguirá tomando en vida, en un futuro próximo, sino que lo ha estado tomando desde hace muchos años –desde hace varias centurias antes de nacer, para ser exactos.
Las vanguardias, que por sus presunciones de clarividencia a menudo confunden la punta de sus narices con el horizonte, con el centro de la Tierra o con el ombligo de un demiurgo, lejano, si, pero visible (ladran, Sancho!), tienden a ultimar el hecho de que los grandes escritores, como todo gran acierto y real constancia de progreso humano, se distinguen por saber mirar atrás. En este sentido, Pynchon, espejo retrovisor de las letras contemporáneas, aventaja a sus colegas al poder resumir en sí al pornógrafo y al santo, las dos antípodas de la condición humana. Del primero toma un ángel cinemático, la pasión por la piel, su respeto a la decadencia natural y tierna de los sentidos, una sonrisa sobre andamios; del segundo, la visión del fondo hueco y potente del mundo inanimado, y un amor casi gratuito por todas las cosas, lo cual le permite prestarles alma, nombre y un pathos milagroso a animales mecánicos, a una letra, a un foco de luz, a gente, incluso.
Pynchon tiene ya su sitio en el infierno junto a Tiresías, el profeta griego, certero, de la cabeza entornada y la perspectiva fatal. La reservación de dicho nicho, por cierto, se concretó antes de que la Historia decidiese solidificarse en su estado actual –siendo descendiente de calvinistas, la predestinación de Pynchon se remonta mucho más lejos y profundo que en la Historia. A Pynchon se lo entiende en los atavismos, en la predestinación de las esencias. Los instintos y las pasiones son siempre los mismos, sean estos los de Abraham o los de Isaac, los del teniente Blicero, esteta y asesino, o los de Gottfried, jóven-fetiche y amor-objeto, sacrificio a un Dios binario, helado, germano y judío.
De ahí que sea justo suponer que para Pynchon, la historia meramente representa una comodidad, un accesorio de especial utilidad referencial. Y que ahora, a sus 65 años, una temporada en el infierno le signifique como mucho una vacación de los curiosos que deifican su silencio, pasando por alto que a Pynchon realmente parecería encantarle el ruido.
V2, modelo para armar
Y por ruido, se entienden muchas cosas. El arco iris de gravedad comienza redefiniendo nuestro concepto de sonoridad, haciendo de extraño eco retroactivo a los comienzos personales del autor en la literatura. Pynchon fue alumno de un distinguido conocedor de mariposas, el a veces escritor y a veces hombre-lupa Vladimir Nabokov, quien no guardó memoria alguna de este alumno en particular (lo cual de por sí resulta extraordinario, pues la dentadura de Pynchon era hagiográfica). Una intimación de su proverbial invisibilidad.
El arco iris....abre con un grito atravesando el cielo, un grito más blanco que grito, atentando, falo hecho cohete, ultrajar el espacio aéreo londinense. Termina igual, en fuegos fatuos, haciendo del espacio un espacio en blanco, plasmando el mundo en el color de extrema paz y nada y grito que Melville, Poe y Hawthorne supieron ver también en la masmédula de las tinieblas. Muerte e immortalización confinadas, simultáneas, a la recurrencia de lo sináptico blanco haciéndose summum de oscuridad, de precisión, de ‘’único punto’’ y ‘’única Sombra’’, blanco valor absoluto. El Ahora italizado, el pulso de la Historia haciéndose ceros, entropía en ascenso, en suspensión lastimera, sexual y eterna, cediendo por grados, por mecánicas lentas, violentas, a la Gravedad, a la imposibilidad de la extinción total como laboratorio de vida tenue, de muerte segura, y de potencial resurrección.
El arco iris..., robado por partes de las guías Baedeker, de Rilke, y sobre todo del recurso inagotable de belleza y horror humano al que le cerramos los ojos día tras día, es una obra inmensamente sinfónica, orquestada en caos, acorde a distorsión, endémica de espejos, voluptuosa, pero de ninguna manera inflada de la deformidad y los excesos que se le atribuyen. Exceso es siempre lo que sobra. Deformidad, en muchos casos, también.
En El arco iris, ningún evento es innecesario, pese a la desconsideración nefasta que tienen las circunstancias, de por sí muy poco circunstanciales, para con los personajes, todos ellos prescindibles a su vez. Maximizando la malevolencia intrínseca de los objetos que intentó negociar en su primera novela, “V”., Pynchon consigue retraer un tanto el aspecto táctil del mal en El arco iris..., sin por ello reducir de manera alguna su tangibilidad. Au contraire, su carácter nuevo e impalpable lo eterniza, humorístico y totalizador.
La fascinación educada que tenemos, como lectores, por la fealdad, nos hace fijar miras en la soledad, el absurdo, la depravación y la miseria que pululan en El arco iris; sin tomar consuelo (perverso, pero consuelo al fin) en que, en nuestro mundo, en el mundo de Pynchon (el otro, el mismo) todo este despojo humano ama y cree y ejerce en la mentira blanca y la invención de excusas y cosas por decir; a diferencia de lo que rige en las fantasías de Bulgakov, en Pynchon el bien a menudo oficia como agente del mal, sin por eso dejar de inspirarnos una fantástica fe en su existencia.
Este vasto modelo para armar, lo que cabe dentro del impase gravitacional, lo que orbita dentro del perímetro del gran compás, esa es la naturaleza hosca de las cosas: de por sí, esta cosmogonía no acaba de ser ni buena ni mala, sino simplemente cierta. La certeza de una anarquía subatómica que impide la fusión fija del mundo al nivel cuántico, posibilita, a su vez, el que el mundo esté armado sobre números y humos, sobre puras abstracciones, sin perder por esto su consistencia física, sus carnes toscas, una soberbia fealdad destellada, de cuando en cuando, por un golpe de luz del cero original.
Hilando en blanco
La escatología pynchoniana no parecería haber sufrido demasiados cambios a través del tiempo, permanece excéntrica, oscura y sensible –las dos primeras novelas del autor, V. ( V., 1963) y La subasta del lote 49 ( The Crying Of Lot 49, 1966), se prestaron a la cimentación del marco teórico y estructural que exigía la ejecución de una obra de la envergadura de El arco iris de gravedad.
V. es, sin duda alguna, una de las introducciones obligadas a la literatura moderna, novela ecléctica, capciosa y violentamente lograda que no sólo introduce una serie de personajes y situaciones recurrentes en el canon pynchoniano, sino finos ejemplos de las directrices propias del posmodernismo, notablemente el recurso estilístico que cobró fama con la publicación de Trampa-22 ( Catch-22,1961) de Joseph Heller, el cual consiste en la adopción de un leitmotif, de un dadá –en el caso de Pynchon la V. del título– y servirse de éste para generar un espinazo de posibilidades casi oulipianas, líquidas de ductibilidad, sin por eso perder el control total que se tiene sobre un circuito cerrado.
Por su parte, La subasta del lote 49 disfruta de estatus de culto en su país de origen, y podría considerársele una suerte de simpático infiernillo posmoderno, en el cual la heroína Oedipa Maas, una inconspicua ama de casa californiana, se ve enredada en un descenso al tuétano de lo bizarro, un maelstrom de abadesas, abogados, dramaturgos ahogados, filatelistas, máquinas para encontrar el duende interno y un sinfín de gente y situaciones a menudo más góticas que surrealistas, que no terminan de tocar fondo nunca, pese a que el fondo, eso sí, existe. La publicación de El arco iris de gravedad en 1973, con su retahíla de controversias e histeria, representa el punto culminante en la carrera de Pynchon. Y el resto es silencio.
Amerika
El resto, en realidad, fue aún literatura. Pynchon reapareció, tras diecisiete años de silencio, con Vineland (Vineland, 1990), un trabajo menor en el conjunto de su creación, pero que a su vez exigió mucho más del Pynchon emotivo y humano, un Pynchon cuyos trabajos anteriores dejaron entrever sólo por momentos, y –cueste lo que cueste decirlo– tal vez por accidente, sin osar una revelación terminal del hombre tras el texto. Dicha revelación se muestra ya en su completa desnudez en Vineland, y el libro debería ser quizás apreciado como un gozne en la obra del autor más que como un hito o un real retorno. Vineland, defectuosa pero hiperdotada de empatía, y sabia, además, de América; es un preámbulo al viaje lúdico y sentimental de Charles Mason y Jeremiah Dixon en la novela homóloga de 1997, según muchos el mejor exponente de la literatura pynchoniana, y el libro más logrado de la última década. Mason y Dixon rescata de los archivos de la historia a la dupla ingenua que trazó una línea invisible de cabo atlántico a cabo (muy poco) pacífico de los actuales Estados Unidos. Y sobre esa línea, que sin existir, que sin ser más que un híbrido de astronomía y agrimensura, un Kafka a gran escala horizontal, una real nadez –sobre esa línea que no está, se decidieron gran parte de las escisiones irreparables de ese país.
Los dos protagonistas, empalagados de fórmulas y tránsitos astrales, taumaturgos de la triangulación, estrelleros indistintos de tantos otros estrelleros, de cualquier otra persona, son, sin embargo, fabulosamente memorables. La rendición de sus aventuras y dilemas resulta conmovedora, inteligente, hábil y extraordinariamente humana –Mason y Dixon bien podría considerarse un Quixote contemporáneo. Pynchon ofrece una vivisección de historia americana reescrita con las ventajas tanto del paralaje como de la retrospección sesuda, delatando en el proceso una madurez resplandeciente, ante todo, de excelente humor. La elaboración de los personajes califica de perfectamente bella, es de una humanidad que ya no colinda, sino que coincide, con la del lector. Charles Mason, estereotipo del inglés mórbido y maravilloso; Jeremiah Dixon, casi un antropólogo moderno, vibrante, electrostático y por momentos genial; la épica amistad que los hace entrañables; todo se desarrolla con una premura que ninguna otra caracterización efectuada en años recientes (medida injusta, pues Mason y Dixon está sin duda destinado a audiencias imperecederas) ha logrado siquiera esbozar.
Viaje al fin de la noche
Lo cual deja pendiente una revisión de aquella macabra cosmovisión pynchoniana. Como se afirmó anteriormente, el carácter ácido y provocador del Pynchon de los sesentas y setentas no ha sufrido, en realidad, mayores cambios. Hay sólo un detalle que vale rescatar en este sentido: Pynchon ha reducido, o mejor dicho enfocado, la escala de su lente original, de sus gafas heliogábalas; esto le ha permitido sofisticar e intensificar su estilo, adquiriendo a la vez la movibilidad que le permite desplazarse elástica, imperceptiblemente, entre la visión álgida del telescopio Hubble y el encuadre clínico de un microscopio de electrones. Thomas Pynchon, ilustre desconocido al fin y al cabo, retiene los bríos originales y los equilibra en un centro que guarda un sospechoso parecido a un cero. Queda en la literatura actual de Pynchon un algo, un je ne sais quoi de sinistre, que se manifestó desde el principio como luz blanca, blanca en la acepción terrible de esterilidad que el blanco implica, blanco engarzado como frecuencia motivacional de toda su obra.
El opus pynchoniano muestra a un criptócrata que invierte cuatro décadas de su vida en afinar cada tuerca de un arma de alta precisión, que ahora apunta, paciente, al corazón de la oscuridad, al punto cero ambicionado tantos años, al alma blanca de la nada, que sí existe, sí.
mucha retórica, hijita, confundes abigarramiento con expresividad. Date un par de vueltas por la realidad de mi cuarto.

Mónica Belevan, otra promesa de nuestras letras por si no lo saben. Tiene terminadas un par de cosas que pondrán de cabeza el medio literario. Creo que ya era hora que empezaran a aparecer narradores de otro peso, y ya no los mismos de siempre apadrinados por Thays. Si puertoelhueco o los dintilacos, como se hacen llamar, quieren realmente tumbarse a la Mafia y a sus adulones, deberían( mejor dicho deberiamos) empezar a darles tribuna a proyectos literarios más ambiciosos y serios como los de Gutierrez y Belevan.
Creo que ha llegado la hora de acabar con un estado de la Literatura en el Perú, acabemos con los paradigmas VargasLLosianos-Brycianos, y sus imitadores desde Ampuero, Cueto, Niño, a Thays, Bayly, Castañeda y tantos otros.
Aqui no se trata de tumbarse bada. Las cosas caen por su propio peso. Lo más dificil será que nosotros podamos tener acceso a este tipo de novelas que ninguna editorial quiere publicar debido a su alta calidad y por considerarlas NO COMERCIALES.
He leído solo el fragmento de esa novela en Hueso Húmero y francamente es lo mejor de lo mejor que se ha publicado en 10 años en el Perú. Por eso se entiende que ninguna editorial se interese por la verdadera literatura y hagan revuelos marketeros por simples mamotretos comerciales. Ahora recién que Alvaro Lasso tiene plata y su editorial se ha capitalizado recién puede ser un editor de verdad y editar libros que valgan la pena. Bien por César Gutierrez y bien por Alvaro Lasso quien da un nuevo giro con su editorial. Bien por Mónica Belevan, bien por las novelas que ninguna editorial comercial quiere publicar. Bien por los que trabajan sin armar argollas. Bien por los que levantan la voz con su poética. Bienvenida literatura!
Así es, Max, Mónica procede como señalas, pero hay que destacar su perseverancia con respecto a la obra de Pynchon, autor que hace sólo diez o quince años era casi un ilustre desconocido en nuestro medio.
Cada vez que oigo o leo acerca de Mónica es prácticamente inevitable que se hable del autor de "La subasta del lote 49"; sé que es una de sus mayores hinchas y que --como dice el anónimo de las 2:15-- tal vez nos sorprenda uno de estos días con algún escrito más que interesante; que sea o no de raigambre "pynchoniana" ya es lo de menos.
Me da mucho gusto que el nombre del autor más huraño del planeta haya salido por fin de ese pequeñísimo círculo (recalco, en nuestro medio) en que se mantenía encerrado hasta hace más o menos una década. Hoy en día ya hasta se está hablando de un epígono peruano, César Gutiérrez.
Salvando las distancias cronológicas y estilísticas, esta situación es muy similar a la de John Irving, cuya primera obra maestra, "El mundo según Garp", leí en 1988 y nunca me cansé de recomendar a mis condiscípulos sanmarquinos. Por entonces (casi) nadie lo conocía o me hizo caso.
Tuvieron que pasar varios años --o quizá tuvo que recomendarlo alguien como Rodrigo Fresán o algún otro escritor de moda-- para que los autores locales y los aspirantes a serlo, ya a mediados de los años noventa, lo relacionaran con Charles Dickens y Günter Grass, además de conocer las versiones cinematográficas de sus obras, y ocupara por fin el lugar que tiene hoy en día.
Saludo también la posición de el (o la) de las 2:15: ya va siendo hora de que salgamos del corsé impuesto por la dupla Vargas Llosa-Bryce; busquemos otros caminos e intentemos al menos hacer algo digno a partir de todo lo que nos permite hoy en día, por ejemplo, la red de redes. Tenemos todo un mundo a sólo un click de distancia, recibámoslo con los brazos y --sobre todo-- los ojos bien abiertos.

A quien corresponda, muchas gracias por el dato de las 9:04. Mientras más gente lea buena literatura, mejor.
En cuanto a Doris, otro dato: no tengo ningún inconveniente en comentar un texto que me parezca interesante en cualquier blog --colocando mi nombre, a diferencia de muchos otros (y otras)--, ya sea uno "oficial" (por favor, tomar muy en cuenta las comillas) o uno como el que ahora nos acoge, considerado por algunos como "basura" (calificación que me parece, en todo caso, muy relativa).
Algo más: no TRABAJO para "El Comercio", hasta el momento sólo he COLABORADO en dos ocasiones con "El Dominical". Si revisas mi blog, notarás que soy un trabajador freelance, y lo mismo puedo escribir para la revista venezolana "Letralia" (número 140 y, próximamente, en el 145); como para "The Barcelona Review", la publicación española que todavía tiene en línea un texto mío aparecido a fines de mayo.
Más bien te agradezco que me hayas brindado la oportunidad de difundir mi hasta ahora escasísima producción periodística. Si, como dices, escribes a los encargados de "El Comercio", les das mis saludos, por favor, y de pasada recomiéndales que se den una vuelta por este blog, que al menos yo encuentro muchas veces divertidísimo (sobre todo los comentarios) y en no pocas ocasiones muy instructivo.

La supuesta discusión entre autores "miméticos" y autores "extraños" (por no emplear otro adjetivo), para ello tendríamos que ingresar a la discusión sobre Teorías de la verdad en el s. XX, cosa que no viene al caso. Un escritor es considerado como tal en tanto y en cuanto pueda crear un universo narrativo original que se sostenga por sí solo, ya sea a nivel mimético, fantástico, real-maravilloso, etc. Dentro de esa perspectiva, un narrador que sí podemos considerar como tal es Mario Bellatín, cuya trayectoria narrativa permite apreciar el trabajo sólido de un escritor entregado a la literatura con toda la conciencia de un arte poética literaria. Y por respeto a los lectores, a este nombre, no podemos añadir los de Santiago del Prado o Mónica Belevan, autores noveles que aún se espera que maduren sus obras y puedan desarrollar una producción literaria respetable. Recomendaria a los lectores que si en verdad quieren leer a un autor "raro" ingresen al unvierso narrativo de Andrés Caidedo, escritor colombiano que desarrolló una corta vida y obra perdurables.
Aqui les lanzo una primicia, la mafia facheron-thais ha amenazado con vetar a Estruendomudo si publica la novela Bombardero. ¿Pueden creerlo? Si, es verdad, vuelvo mas luego con mas primicias al respecto, sustentando lo que parecia ser un rumor y ya es una realidad.
Mónica será una promesa y es una realidad por detrás y pór delante desde cualquier ángulo.Ahora compararla con el soplón y sicofante Santiago del Prado? Es una tremenda exageración.Una infame injusticia.Esa caca con ventilador es horrible .Aquién le ganó? Sólo coral es de su calaña malicienta.

No te preocupes, Aguirre, siempre tengo presente la frase que dice "Un consejo hasta de un conejo".
Por mi parte, te recomiendo que revises uno de los mejores films de Werner Herzog, "Aguirre, la ira de Dios"; ojalá te resulte menos difícil de entender que ciertos textos.

Monica Belevan solo tiene 24 años y ya escribe mejor que muchos de los que aqui veo y ha leido mucho mas tambien. Yo he hablado con ella un par de veces y no es la tipa pedante que puede parecer de lejos, en realidad es simpatica y amable aunque histrionica si, pero tan solo al comienzo. Yo sí creo que tiene un gran futuro porque es sumamente esforzada e inteligente, cualidad que se echa mucho de menos en nuestra literatura. No creo que ella ande buscando una editorial de nuestro pais para publicar algo si decide hacerlo, porque si es tan bueno como dicen pues seguro se iria a una editorial española o una argentina o quiza una inglesa, ya que gran parte de lo que anda escribiendo esta en ingles. No se si vaya ser todo lo buena que dicen pero de que va ser una de las mejores si estoy seguro, solo esperen y veran. Jode si que muchas de las opiniones sean basicamente inspiradas por la envidia. Envidia de ver una chica tan culta, joven y ademas guapa, claro que si, escribiendo con mucho estilo sobre un autor del que tan solo saben de oidas o porque lo vieron en los Simpson, jaja.
a los 24 Easton Ellis ya rehuía a la prensa y preparaba American Psycho, hoy no pasa nada con él. Asì que todo es relativo mi querido Faverón, sigue poniendo las manos en el fuego por tu mancebo de 17 años, esa es una mejor apuesta.

Mónica Beleván ganó la primera edición del premio de cuentos de "Crisol", y debutó (como actriz) en un cortometraje sobre unos chibolos que se quedan atrapados en un cuarto luego de un atentado terrorista... la chica prometía, sobre todo cuando dijo "voltéense todos, quiero orinar"...

El texto se estructura en pequeños párrafos, generalmente de menos de un folio de extensión, en los que no suele haber apenas signos de puntuación y el texto gira con rapidez vertiginosa en torno a visiones, impresiones, recuerdos y complejos juegos con las palabras y los significados.
Es indudable la calidad y el interés de este tipo de prosa, el disfrute del lenguaje por sí mismo, pero no es un libro al alcance de cualquiera, no es fácil de leer y se requiere una enorme sintonía con el mundo del autor para disfrutarlo al cien por cien. Me parece que sólo una editorial vanguardista o un tanto experimental encontraría factible su publicación, aunque dentro de su elitismo y su originalidad, tal vez fuera del alcance de la mayoría.

Son un cague de risa no solo por sus intercambios con sus muchachos pynchianos sino con ese inglés que se maneja (o se manejaba en el 2002 y antes), ultra latinizado y pomposo y que francamente parece salido de un skit de Monty Python.
